The music of the pearl

The music in The Pearl is a motif that symbolizes either good or bad, depending on if it is the song of the family, or the evil music. The pearl could symbolize hope, or greed. It could represent hope because of all the potential it brings to Kino's family, but it could also be greed because of how the pearl buyers will do anything to steal Kino's pearl. Overall, the pearl's effect on Kino's family was devastating, the house was burned, the canoe destroyed, and the baby killed. The pearl's symbolism in Kino's society is that poorer people will always be taken advantage of by the richer people, out of the poor's helplessness and the rich's greed. When Kino threw the pearl away into the ocean, he didn't throw a great fortune away, he threw away a dirty plague that was destroying his family.
